What Rubbish was founded by Mike Collins as a sole trader with just one transit tipper. His goal was simple: to help people clear their unwanted waste. The business quickly gained traction, particularly within the construction industry and property management sector.
As demand grew, Mike's father, Chris, his sister, Rosie, and long-term friend, Luke, joined the team, further strengthening the company's foundations.
In 2016, What Rubbish Bristol Ltd was officially incorporated (company number 10065624), marking a new chapter for the business. A turning point came when Julian, a friend and Italian restaurant owner, frustrated with poor waste collection services, asked Mike to take care of his ongoing business waste. Initially, Mike emptied the bins by hand, but he soon saw an opportunity to offer a reliable solution for other businesses facing the same challenges. As demand surged, the company invested in a Dennis Eagle bin lorry and welcomed specialised driver Martyn Riordan, helping the business expand rapidly. Today, What Rubbish serves over 500 businesses with wheelie bin collections—and that number continues to grow.
2025 has been a landmark year for us. With the support of Emma at Alder King, we secured a purpose-built recycling centre on Ashmead Road in Keynsham. This exciting new facility will allow us to expand our services to include skip hire and public access to recycling, reinforcing our commitment to sustainable growth. More importantly, our goal is to give back—by creating jobs, supporting local charities, and fostering opportunities within our community.
